An economist used maths to beat the football betting bookies

Gambling is and always has been a massive element in the beautiful game. Every match day millions of people all over the world sit down with a newspaper (or more likely web page) open, looking at the fixtures and trying to not let anything like petty hatred for a local rival team or a misguided overestimation of their own teams realistic chances influence the best they will place for the days entertainment.

I often wondered what would happen if a real Stato (statitician) took a purist, disciplined and serious punt at the game relying on only the data and not the heart, intuition, gut feeling or whatever else us mere mortals use to make the bookies richer every week. And then someone exactly like that did it and it’s  fascinating and entertaining read for any fans of the game, gamblers or not.
